What is garden mulching, why is it needed?

Garden Mulching is covering the soil with a covering material to retain moisture and heat. Mulch is used for all types of plants: beds with berries or vegetables, fruit trees or even indoor plants. Consider the benefits of soil mulching:

  1. Retain moisture and maintain heat transfer. In hot summer, mulch will protect the soil from overheating, and in early spring it will save plant roots from hypothermia.
  2. Enriching the soil with useful nutrients, changing the acidity of the soil.
  3. Mulch prevents “washing out” and leaving of nutrients from the soil.
  4. Weeds do not grow on mulch soil.
  5. Mulch protects plants from pests.
  6. Thanks to the mulch, the berries do not come into contact with the ground – preventing the development of rot.
  7. When watering, dirt is not sprayed on the leaves and fruits of plants.
  8. Decorative function, the garden looks more aesthetically pleasing.

When and how to mulch?

Garden Mulching is done in two stages, depending on the purpose. Repeat the procedure every year or every few years depending on the material used.

Mulching trees is carried out along the radius of the trunk in a circle with a layer of 10 cm. To mulch the lawn, cover the entire grass with a layer of 7-10 cm. Separately, it is worth highlighting vegetable and berry crops: mulching the beds is done before planting. The prepared area is covered with a film for mulching, in the right places in the film, cuts are made crosswise with a sharp knife, and plants are planted there. Regardless of the material, the process is always the same. Prepare the ground first by getting rid of weeds. Water and feed the soil abundantly with the necessary fertilisers. After these procedures, cover the plants with the selected material. Greenhouse mulching is similar to outdoor mulching.

Garden Mulching material is organic and inorganic.

The inorganic garden material, in turn, is divided into covering and decorative. An example of a covering material is a plastic film, a decorative one – granite and marble chips, colored sawdust, etc.

Organic mulch has a nutritious function in addition to its basic moisture retention function. The material, rotting, nourishes the soil with useful substances. But remember that some types of mulch change the acidity of the soil, so always check what you are using and on what soil. Sawdust mulching is a popular method. But the sawdust cakes, the plant underneath it vomits.

If you use wood chips for mulching, this problem can be easily avoided. Bark mulching is used for coniferous crops. The tannins secreted by the bark and the property of the bark to acidify the soil are to the taste of this type of plant. Mulching with straw is perfect for processing garden beds and fruit trees. Just remember to keep the roots open.

The most affordable option is grass mulching. Any gardener has enough of this material. In addition to these options, gardeners use materials such as needles, peat, eggshells for mulching & Seasonal tree and garden treatment .
